Useful for: Texturing multiple objects uniquely. Transmission - When a light passes through a surface (whether it's a glass, refraction or translucent shader) it becomes a Transmission ray.

Diffuse, Glossy and Singular rays are sometimes also Reflection rays. This does not necessarily mean the object is reflective like a mirror, simply that the light bounced off it rather than passing through.

  • Reflection - Once a ray bounces off something, it becomes a reflection ray.
  • Singular - A singular ray is basically the same as a Glossy ray, but only occurs when you use the 'Sharp' glossy mode - so only for perfectly clear reflections.
  • Glossy - This can be used to change how something appears in reflections, again usually for optimization.
  • Diffuse - Mostly used for optimization purposes, like making a glossy shader appear like a diffuse shader to other diffuse surfaces to reduce caustics.
  • control what shadows look like! You can change the colour of an object's shadow, or fake caustics by creating a fast-rendering fake shadow for your glass. This is often used for optimization purposes, like to make a bump map invisible to everything but the camera and shave off 30% of your render time.
  • Camera - Probably the most commonly-used of the ray-types, the Camera ray lets you change what something looks like compared to how it affects the rest of the scene.
  • So far, his most successful/popular works have been his Original Gameboy model on Sketchfab (see above), and the MANvsGAME logo. You can also find his distilled tutorials on YouTube and reach out to him on twitter at. When he isn’t working his day job as a Linux Systems Administrator, you can find Alex on his own Twitch.TV stream, doing his best to entertain and inform regarding the finer points of 3D modelling in general, and Blender specific tools and workflows. Smith prepared this fantastic short video tutorial to take you through the process:Ĭheck out some other fantastic examples of baked models:Īlex’s focus in the 3D world so far has been training others in the ways of Blender and creating 3D versions of streamers’ logos for use on their shows. In order to export such models to Sketchfab, you will have to take a few extra steps. As of version 2.71, you can use the Cycles renderer and apply it’s super-realistic lighting to your models. One of the 3D apps that offers such a baking system is Blender. You can use area lights, ambient occlusion and even caustics this way – all of which are not available using our standard WebGL lighting. ‘Baking’ lighting into your models is a great way to achieve realistic images that can still be displayed in real time.
